How much does Amber Electric cost?
Amber doesn't sell electricity at a set rate. You pay a flat membership, and everything else on the bill is passed through at cost: the wholesale price of the energy you use, your network's charges, metering, and market and environmental costs.
The short answer
Amber Electric costs $25 a month ($300 a year) for the membership, plus your energy at wholesale prices and the network, metering and market charges for your area, which Amber passes through without a markup. Promo code X9DWGVWC takes $10 off each monthly bill for 20 months ($200) under the Spring offer.
Every line on an Amber bill
These are the charges Amber's help centre lists, grouped the way they appear on the bill.
| Bill line | What it is | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Amber - Monthly Subscription Cost | The $25 membership, once per NMI. Any promo credit appears separately under Credits. | Amber (its only margin) |
| General Usage Wholesale | The average market price of the energy you used, including grid loss factors (typically 3 to 5%). | The wholesale market |
| Network - Fixed | A daily charge for the poles and wires. Everyone on the same tariff pays the same rate. | Your network (regulated) |
| Network - Anytime Energy | A per-kWh network charge, which may be split into peak, shoulder and off-peak rates depending on your tariff. | Your network |
| Demand charges | Only if your network has you on a demand tariff. | Your network |
| Metering | A daily fee for access to your meter data. | The metering company |
| Market | Fees every retailer pays the market operator to run the market and keep the grid stable. | Market operator |
| Environmental Certificate Cost | Certificates bought to meet the Renewable Energy Target, currently about 20% of grid use. | Federal scheme |
| Carbon Neutral or GreenPower Offset | Depends on your plan: carbon credits for your grid use, or GreenPower certificates for 100% of it. | Your plan choice |
| Price Protection Hedging | A hedge cost Amber describes as helping keep your average quarterly cost within its Quarterly Bill Guarantee. | Amber, at cost |
| Solar Exports (credit) | The wholesale value of solar you send to the grid. | The wholesale market |
The network, metering and market amounts differ by area and tariff, so no one can quote "the" Amber price for Australia. Enter your address on Amber's sign-up to see the energy fact sheet for your home before you commit.
What the promo credit does to the membership
The credit is $10 off each monthly bill, so it covers 40% of the $25 membership for as long as it runs: 12 months on the standard offer ($120 of $300), or 20 months on the Spring offer ($200 of $500, which is $120 in your first year and $80 in your second). In dollars, the membership you actually pay works out like this:
| Months | Standard offer ($120) | Spring offer ($200) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 12 | $25 − $10 = $15 a month | $25 − $10 = $15 a month |
| 13 to 20 | $25 a month | $15 a month |
| Total over 20 months | $500 − $120 = $380 | $500 − $200 = $300 |
| After that | $25 a month | $25 a month |
Joining by 9 November 2026 doesn't lower the first year's cost compared with the standard offer. It adds 8 more months of credit, which is $80 more in total.

Why two Amber homes can pay very different amounts
Because the energy itself is billed at the wholesale price in 30-minute blocks, timing matters more than on a flat-rate plan. Power is often cheap in the middle of a sunny day, and export prices can fall to zero or below at those times. On hot evenings, or when the grid is tight, prices can climb far above a normal retail rate. Amber sends price spike alerts, and a home battery or EV on SmartShift can buy cheap and avoid the expensive half-hours automatically. A home that uses most of its power from 4 to 8pm, with nothing it can move, carries the same $25 membership without the cheap periods to make up for it.
For a measured example, the real numbers from a battery home on Amber show grid power averaging 13.75c/kWh over 90 days of winter and early spring. To compare Amber with fixed-rate plans for your address, the Australian Energy Regulator's Energy Made Easy is free and independent.
Common questions
How much is Amber Electric's membership fee?
$25 a month, which is $300 a year. It's charged once per NMI (per connection, not per meter) and it's Amber's only retail margin: the energy and network costs underneath are passed through.
Does Amber Electric have a daily supply charge?
Yes, but it isn't Amber's. The "Network - Fixed" line is your network's regulated daily charge for poles and wires, and a separate daily metering fee goes to the metering company. Amber passes both through with no retail markup. The amounts depend on your network and tariff and are on the fact sheet for your address.
Is Amber cheaper than a normal electricity plan?
It depends on when you use power. Wholesale prices change every 5 minutes and Amber bills on 30-minute averages, so power can be very cheap in the middle of a sunny day and expensive on a hot evening. Homes with a battery, an EV or usage they can move tend to come out ahead; homes with most usage from 4 to 8pm often don't. The fit check gives a quick read.
Does the promo code reduce Amber's membership fee?
In effect, yes. The credit is $10 off each monthly bill, so it covers 40% of the $25 membership for as long as it runs: 12 months on the standard offer ($120 of $300), or 20 months on the Spring offer ($200 of $500, which is $120 in your first year and $80 in your second).
Are there exit fees if I leave Amber?
Amber's help centre says there are no termination fees for switching to another retailer. Promo credit you haven't received yet is forfeited when you leave.
Can I get concessions on Amber?
Amber's help centre says that if you hold an eligible concession card, Amber may claim concessions for you. Eligibility for state rebates depends on where you live.
