How to sign up to Amber Electric
Joining Amber is an online form that takes a few minutes. Amber then handles the switch from your current retailer. Here's what to have ready, the steps with promo code X9DWGVWC, and what happens in the weeks after you submit.
The short version
Open Amber's sign-up with X9DWGVWC pre-filled, enter your address, add your details and payment method, and check the code is in the promo field before you submit. The switch usually starts within 2 business days, you have 10 business days to cool off, and the promo credit ($200, as $10 a month for 20 months) is processed within two months.
Before you start
- Your home is in Amber's area: NSW, Victoria, South Australia, the ACT or south-east Queensland. Amber checks each address.
- You've never been an Amber customer at this or any earlier home or business address. The promo is for brand-new customers only (Amber referral terms, clause 1.1.1).
- You're 18 or older (clause 1.1.3).
- A payment method. Amber pays bills automatically from the details you give at sign-up unless you choose another option.
- Know your setup. Amber's quote form asks whether you have solar panels, solar and a battery, or an EV. A recent bill is handy for comparing prices afterwards.
Sign-up steps
- Open the sign-up with the code. The button below opens Amber's own sign-up page with X9DWGVWC already in the promo field.
- Enter your address and setup. Amber shows your network, your prices and the energy fact sheet for your area. Read the fact sheet: it lists the network and other charges that sit on top of the wholesale price.
- Add your details and payment method.
- Check the promo field, then submit. Make sure X9DWGVWC is showing. If you forget, email info@amber.com.au soon after joining and ask for it to be added.
$200 credit for sign-ups until 9 November. Use X9DWGVWC:

Both buttons open Amber's own sign-up page with X9DWGVWC already in the promo field; "Copy & apply" also copies the code and opens it in a new tab.
What happens after you submit
| Straight away | Amber emails a sign-up confirmation. Your 10-business-day cooling-off period starts from that email. |
|---|---|
| Within about 2 business days | The transfer from your old retailer usually starts. Homes with a basic meter get an estimated start read. |
| When the switch is done | An email titled "You're With Us! Here's What's Next". Your old retailer sends a final bill. |
| Within 4 to 6 weeks (if needed) | A free smart meter installation, if it's safe to install. Your network may then move you to its default tariff, which can be time-of-use or demand-based. |
| Each month | A bill about a week before it's due, paid automatically. Smart meter homes are billed monthly, basic meter homes quarterly. |
| Within 2 months | The promo credit is processed and shows under "Credits" on your bill: $10 a month for 20 months. |
Moving into a new home rather than switching where you live? Amber has a separate move-in guide, because there's no current retailer to transfer from.
First things to set up in the app
Amber's app shows the price for every 30-minute period. Turn on price spike notifications: on hot evenings the wholesale price can climb far above a normal retail rate, and the alert is your cue to hold off on big appliances. If you have a compatible battery or EV, look at SmartShift, Amber's automation that charges when power is cheap. Not sure Amber suits your home at all? The 60-second fit check is worth doing before you submit.
Common questions
How long does it take to switch to Amber Electric?
The online sign-up takes a few minutes. Amber's help centre says the transfer from your old retailer usually starts within 2 business days, and you get an email titled "You're With Us! Here's What's Next" once it's done. If your home needs a smart meter, the free install usually happens within 4 to 6 weeks of signing up.
Do I need to tell my current retailer I'm leaving?
No. Amber notifies your old retailer once the switch is processed, and that retailer sends you a final bill.
Is there a cooling-off period?
Yes. You have 10 business days from Amber's sign-up confirmation email. To cancel, contact Amber and you stay with your current retailer. Don't sign up with another retailer during that time.
Do I need a smart meter to join Amber?
You can sign up without one. If your home has an older meter, Amber arranges a free smart meter installation (if it's safe to install), usually within 4 to 6 weeks. Until then you're billed quarterly on the old meter; with a smart meter, Amber bills monthly.
Can I add the promo code after I've signed up?
Amber's help centre says you can email info@amber.com.au and ask for a forgotten promo code to be added. Only one discount applies per customer, so it's still best to check X9DWGVWC is in the promo field before you submit.
Are there exit fees if I leave Amber later?
Amber's help centre says there are no termination fees when you switch to another retailer. Any promo credit you haven't received yet is forfeited when you leave.
